About BINI :

The Filipino female group Bini (stylized all caps; formerly known as Star Hunt Academy Girls or SHA Girls) was founded in 2019 as a result of ABS-CBN’s Star Hunt Academy. Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, Jhoanna, and Sheena make up the group of eight.

Following two years of training at Star Hunt Academy, Bini made their debut with the song “Born to Win” on June 11, 2021. On November 20, 2020, the group released a pre-debut single called “Da Coconut Nut” ahead of their official debut. Since then, the group has been well-known and is known as the “Nation’s Girl Group” because of its considerable influence on pop culture in the Philippines and the general public.

They emerged as the first Filipino pop group to have the highest number of monthly Spotify listeners, the first to top the Philippine Songs chart on Billboard. Additionally, they are the first to be honored with the “Rising Star” Billboard Philippines Women in Music Award.

Bini became the first Filipino artists to reach the milestone when they debuted at 193rd position on the Top Artist Global Chart on Spotify on June 9, 2024. On June 14, the trio overtook Taylor Swift to become the first Filipino performer to appear at the top of Spotify Philippines’ Daily Top Artists ranking.

The term binibini, which translates to “young lady” in Tagalog, was chosen for the group in reference to its mission statement, which is to “embody the idea of a modern Filipina – sweet, fierce, independent, and informed”.

“Bloom(s)” are Bini fans; they are frequently stylized as BL∞M(S), with the infinity symbol taking the place of the Os. the group’s slogan, “Walo hanggang dulo” (Eight until the end), served as motivation. According to descriptions, the name represents the “beginning of springtime that there is always beauty after every cold trial” and is drawn from Bini’s experiences. The Bini members selected it from fan-submitted name proposals during a special announcement webcast on February 13, 2021.

History: Star Hunt Academy formed until 2018–2020

The Head of Entertainment Production at ABS-CBN, Laurenti Dyogi, had the idea to create a training camp where young people hoping to become celebrities “can develop or further hone their talents” because he believes “the Filipino talent has a place on the global stage.”

The Star Hunt Academy program, which ABS-CBN introduced in 2018, attracted 250 applicants between the from throughout the Philippines, between the ages of 16 and 19. The first group of female Star Hunt Academy trainees, initially consisting of twelve females, were chosen from this pool of applicants in addition to talent scout recommendations.

Eight of the twelve girl trainees were ultimately chosen to represent Dyogi instead of their original nine-member idol girl group debut: Maraiah Queen “Aiah” Arceta, Nicolette “Colet” Vergara, Mary Loi “Maloi” Ricalde, Gweneth “Gwen” Apuli, Stacey Aubrey Sevilleja, Mikhaela “Mikha” Lim, Sheena Mae Catacutan, and Jhoanna Robles. Gwen and Sheena, two of the eight members, were the first housemates of Pinoy Big Brother: Otso.

Between 2018 and 2020, the ensemble received instruction from local coaches, including a former chair of the professional vocal coach Dance coach Mickey Perz, who was born in Austria, the Department of Voice, Music Theater, and Dance at the University of the Philippines College of Music in Kitchy Molina, and the South Korean coaches at MU Doctor Academy.

The trio made their debut as Star Hunt Academy trainees and their first performance on the PBB Otso Big Night online pre-show on August 3, 2019, when they were originally unveiled as SHA trainees. They also played at two ABS-CBN events and their first mall gig in Taguig. They also made appearances at the 2019 Manila Southeast Asian Games Thanksgiving celebration and an event hosted by the National Youth Commission, where they were named Youth Ambassadors.

Dyogi published a performance practice video featuring the group’s singing and dancing in May 2020. Showing off their workout gains, Young JV and Gary Valenciano dance to “Ngiti” (Smile) on Twitter. The quartet performed K-pop dance renditions of Blackpink’s “How You Like That,” Twice’s “More & More,” and Red Velvet’s “In & Out” at the August 2020 Happy Hallyu Day 4 event of the Philippine K-pop Convention.

2020 Pre-launch events for “Da Coconut Nut”

MU Doctor Academy and South Korean music production group Vo3e worked together to create an electropop version of national musician Ryan Cayabyab’s well-known novelty tune “Da Coconut Nut” for Bini’s pre-debut single. Furthermore, MU Doctor Academy partnered with popular K-pop groups’ choreographers Moon Yeon-joo and Kwak Seong-chan to produce the choreography.

The official lyric video for their 2020 reimagining of After a series of teases and the revelation of their group name, Bini, “Da Coconut Nut”—which also functioned as their pre-debut single—was released on the group’s official YouTube page. On November 20, the official music video made its debut. It’s Showtime, a noontime variety show, featured Bini’s first live performance of “Da Coconut Nut” on November 21.

2021–2022: “Born to Win” makes its debut.

Bini teased their first formal debut on May 4, 2021, with a QR code that led to the image “Are you ready for the Biniverse?” A series of teases leading up to their premiere came next. The group’s official debut was revealed by their music label, Star Music, in the same month with the release of the track “Born to Win”, which became available on June 4.

The group’s first half of their first launch, Bini: The Runway, was held on KTX.PH on the same day as the release of “Born to Win”. As the group wore pieces that were especially made for each Bini member by well-known Filipino designer Francis Libiran, The Runway united fashion with music. The girls flaunted their Libiran-made attire at their Metro photo shoot, which was featured in an article about the group’s debut that Metro published that same day.

During the second portion of Bini’s debut launch, The Showcase, which took place on June 11, Bini performed “Da Coconut Nut” and “Born to Win” while interacting with fans and giving them a mini-concert experience.

Additionally, they carried out three group shows: Gwen and Sheena sang “Tagu-Taguan” by KZ Tandingan; Colet, Jhoanna, and Maloi sang “Biyaya” by Janine Berdin; and Aiah, Stacey, and Mikha presented their original rap song “World War C,” which is about being strong in the face of a pandemic.

Fans may also see footage of the girls’ intense training sessions at ABS-CBN’s Star Hunt Academy as well as the personal journeys of each Bini member through the Showcase. On The Showcase and Bini’s official YouTube channel, the official music video for “Born to Win” debuted on the same day. As part of their first live performance as a debut group on ASAP, Bini sang “Born to Win” on June 13.

The trio performed during the Happy Hallyu Day 5 event of the Philippine K-pop Convention in August. Beyond “Born to Win,” there are dance renditions of other K-pop songs.

On September 10, Bini released their third official single, “Kapit Lang” (Hold On), in response to the release of their debut single. At midnight, the original music video debuted on Bini’s official YouTube channel. At the Miss Universe Philippines 2021 competition on September 30, Bini gave a rendition of “Born to Win” that was altered. The song served as the theme music for both the preliminary swimsuit and evening gown rounds of the pageant.

The group was named “The Burgeoning Grace” on the cover of the Dubai-based magazine Xpedition in February 2022, making Bini, along with brother group BGYO, one of the first Filipino celebrities to get an NFT magazine cover and the first in The Metaverse will be used to launch the Middle East region.
