About Kishore Kumar :

Born Abhas Kumar Ganguly (pronounce it ⓧ), Kishore Kumar was an Indian playback singer, musician, and actor who lived from 4 August 1929 until 13 October 1987. He is recognized by many as one of the most exceptional, significant, and captivating vocalists in Indian music history. Renowned for his ability to sing songs in multiple voices and his yodelling skills, Kumar was one of the most renowned singers in the Indian subcontinent. He was a multi-genre singer in the past, but several of his uncommon compositions—which are now regarded as classics—have been lost to time.

He sang in numerous Indian languages besides Hindi, such as Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, Odia, and Urdu. He has published a few non-film albums in multiple languages, mainly in Bengali, which are considered as all-time classics. According to his brother and famed actor Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar was successful as a singer because his “voice hits the mike, straight, at its most sensitive point”

Kumar was a busy actor as well. His debut cinematic role was in the 1946 film Shikari, which starred his brother Ashok. The 1951 Bombay Talkies picture Andolan featured Kumar in his first main role. With his brother’s support, he was able to get some acting gigs, but his true passion was singing. Following the triumph of movies like Ladki, Char Paise, and Baap Re Baap, Kumar took acting more seriously and went on to star in several hit films as the lead actor from 1955 to 1966. Kumar featured in two films directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee: Musafir (1957) and Naukari (1954) by Bimal Roy.

His prime acting years were from 1954 to 1968. Out of 28 nominations, he received 8 Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, setting a record for both the most nominations and wins in that category. The Madhya Pradesh government gave him the Lata Mangeshkar Award in 1985. The “Kishore Kumar Award” was instituted in 1997 by the Madhya Pradesh government in recognition of achievements to the Hindi film industry. His hitherto unheard final song fetched ₹15.6 lakh at the Osian’s Cinefan Auction in New Delhi in 2012.

Abhas Kumar Ganguly, the father of Kishore Kumar, was born in Khandwa, Central Provinces (now in Madhya Pradesh), to a Bengali Brahmin Ganguly family. His mother, Gouri Devi, was a homemaker from a prosperous Bengali family, and his father, Kunjalal Ganguly (Gangopadhyay), was a lawyer. The Kamavisadar Gokhale family of Khandwa sent an invitation to Kunjalal Gangopadhyaya to serve as their personal attorney. Ashok, the eldest, Sati Devi, and Anoop were the other three siblings; Kumar was the youngest.

Ashok, Kumar’s brother, started acting in Hindi movies when he was still a young child. With Ashok’s assistance, Anoop later made his film debut. Kumar received his degree from Indore’s Christian College.

Following Ashok Kumar’s rise to fame in Hindi cinema, the Ganguly family made frequent trips to Bombay, now known as Mumbai. After renaming himself “Kishore Kumar,” Abhas Kumar began his acting career at Bombay Talkies, where his brother was employed, as a chorus singer. Kumar was given the opportunity to sing “Marne Ki Duayen Kyon Mangu” for the 1948 movie Ziddi by music director Khemchand Prakash. Many other roles were given to Kumar after this, but he wasn’t really serious about pursuing a career in movies. He moved to Bombay in 1949.

In the early part of his career, Kumar was greatly influenced by singer K. L. Saigal, and he even adopted elements of his singing technique in his early films. However, over time, he developed his own distinct style.

He was a huge fan of Danny Kaye, the actor and singer in Hollywood. At his Gouri Kunj home, he had portraits of these three figures hung up, and he regularly bent down in front of them out of reverence.

Later in his career, playback singer Ahmed Rushdi also had a big influence on Kumar. In fact, Kumar liked Rushdi so much that he performed an homage to him at London’s Royal Albert Hall by singing some of his songs.

Many of Kumar’s songs, such as Chala Jata Hoon, Zindagi ek Safar Hai Suhana, and Yeh Dil Na Hota Bechara, featured yodelling. The technique, which drew inspiration from Tex Morton and Jimmie Rodgers, eventually became a defining characteristic of his singing.Kumar’s singing ability is awarded to music director S. D. Burman. When Burman went to Ashok’s residence to work on Mashaal (1950), he overheard Kumar mimicking K. L. Saigal.

In addition to complimenting him, he advised him to stop imitating Saigal and instead create his own unique style. Eventually, after hearing yodelling on Tex Morton and Jimmie Rodgers’ songs, Kumar created his own singing style of his own.60Kishore was forced to sing for Dev Anand by S. D. Burman from the 1950s to the early 1970s. S. D. Burman gave him the instruction and gave him a lot of encouragement, particularly in the late 1950s and early 1960s, which helped Kumar grow into a fantastic vocalist in the years that followed.

S. D. Burman recorded Kumar’s voice for the following films: Guide (1965), Jewel Thief (1967), Prem Pujari (1970), Tere Mere Sapne (1971), Nau Do Gyarah (1957), House No. 44 (1955), Funtoosh (1956), Munimji (1954), Taxi Driver (1954), and Dev Anand’s Munimji (1957). Additionally, he wrote the soundtrack for Kumar’s 1958 home film Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi.

“Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke” from Nau Do Gyarah (1957), “Ai Meri Topi Palat Ke Aa” from Funtoosh (1956), “Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si” from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, and “Maana Janaab Ne Pukara Nahin” from Paying Guest (1957) were a few of their songs. Burman’s duets for Asha Bhosle and Kishore included “Ankhon Mein Kya Ji” from Nau Do Gyarah (1957), “Chhod Do Aanchal” from Paying Guest (1957), and Haal Kaisa Hai Janaab Ka, Paanch Rupaiya Baara Aana, and Ankhon Mein Kya Ji from Nau Do Gyarah (1957), “Arre Yaar Meri Tum Bhi Ho Gajab” from Teen Deviyan (1965), and Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958).
