About Dhee :
Australian singer Dheekshitha Venkadeshan, better known by her stage name Dhee, was born on June 26, 1998. She is well-known for her work as a playback vocalist in Indian films. She was raised in Sydney after being born to Tamil parents in Jaffna.
Her unique alto voice and her collaborations with her stepfather, Santhosh Narayanan, are what have made her most famous. Her performance of “Kaattu Payale” from the 2020 movie Soorarai Pottru earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Singer.
Childhood and work
Dhee was born in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, on June 26, 1998. to Venkadesan, a Tamil father from Sri Lanka, and Meenakshi Iyer, a Carnatic musician of Indian background. Her mother lived in Sydney, Australia, where she was raised and attended school. Sudheekshanan, her older brother, and is the stepdaughter of Santhosh Narayanan, a composer of Indian music.
During breaks from her studies, Dhee sang on two of Narayanan’s albums, Pizza II: Villa (2013) and Cuckoo (2014), to start her playback singing career.
Dhee earned her debut after moving to Chennai when she and Shakthisree Gopalan sang “Naan Nee” on Narayanan’s album for Pa. Ranjith’s Madras (2014). The duo’s performance at the Vijay Awards and Filmfare Awards earned them nominations for Best Female Singer.
Dhee’s performance in Sudha Kongara’s sports drama Irudhi Suttru (2016) won her praise from critics. Dhee recorded the solo songs “Ey Sandakaara” and “Usuru Narumbuley” while serving as the lead vocalist for Ritika Singh’s boxer character in the movie, who is situated in North Madras.
According to Behindwoods.com, the first song was describing the latter as “another classic Santhosh [Narayanan] number that gets your attention in no time” and adding that Dhee’s “pathos song is a revelation of sorts.” With songs from Kongara’s Guru, a reimagining of the director’s own Irudhi Suttru, Dhee made her Telugu film debut in 2017.
Before working with Yuvan Shankar Raja on the song “Rowdy Baby” for Maari 2 (2018), Dhee continued to collaborate with Narayanan on critically acclaimed albums for movies like Kaala (2018) and Vada Chennai (2018). Soon after its release, the song, which was sung with actor Dhanush, became viral. With over 1.5 billion views since then, the song has become the most viewed Tamil music video and among the most viewed Indian songs on YouTube.
forever. Working with composer G.V. Prakash Kumar, Dhee’s song “Kaattu Payale” from the Kongara film Soorarai Pottru (2020) earned her her first Filmfare Award for Best Female Singer.
Featuring Arivu (from The Casteless Collective), Dhee made her debut in independent Tamil music on March 7, 2021, with “Enjoy Enjaami” under the A.R. Rahman-led label maajja. The track’s composition, influenced by Tamil Nadu’s Oppari style, and its anti-oppression lyrical mood made the song an immediate success, with the music video getting over 50 million views within weeks of its release on YouTube. It is the first song released under the maajja label and was produced by Narayanan. The popularity of “Enjoy Enjaami” was quickly marred by debate regarding Arivu’s alleged lack of inclusion in the song’s
advertising in support of Narayanan and Dhee. His exclusion from the covers of a Spotify remix by DJ Snake and the August 2021 issue of Rolling Stone India sparked these discussions, which mostly focused on his status as a “featured” musician. While Arivu has insisted that he wrote and composed the song altogether, Dhee addressed the topic in August 2022 by claiming that she has credited Arivu and Narayanan “every chance [she] got”.
Dhee made a comeback to Tamil film in the ensuing years by working musically with Narayanan and G.V. Prakash Kumar. She collaborated with composer Anirudh Ravichander for the first time on “Jujubee” for the 2023 blockbuster Jailer, which was helmed by Nelson and starred Rajinikanth, Ravichander’s uncle. She produced “Viduthal” in Darwin Kuriakose’s Anweshippin Kandethum, with Narayanan’s music, marked her Malayalam language debut in 2024.
It was revealed during the 2021 “Enjoy Enjaami” promotions that Dhee’s first studio album, which would be her first English-language release since making her breakthrough in the Indian music industry, would be produced by Maajja. Without Maajja’s help, Dhee’s debut English-language single, “I Wear My Roots Like a Medal,” was released in October 2024. Dhee wrote, composed, and performed it; Narayanan and Aditya Ravindran co-produced it.

Rediff.com’s Raja Sen commended his range as an actor, stating that he “sheds his easy-breezy charm — but, crucially, not his slightly hapless natural likeability — and bubbles up volcanically, his eyes frequently doing the talking.” For his performance, he was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
In 2015, Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor attended an ABCD 2 promotional event.
Next, Dhawan played the role of Mumbai dancer Suresh Mukund, the founder of Kings United and eventual winner of the 2012 World Hip Hop Dancing Championship, opposite Shraddha Kapoor in the dance movie ABCD 2. The feature was criticized by Reuters reviewer Shilpa Jamkhandikar, who discovered Dhawan claiming that
“the rest of the film could have been just a bunch of music videos except for the honest note he strikes” as the only positive aspect of the movie. ABCD 2 brought in ₹1.67 billion (US$20 million) globally; the movie’s box office success made Box Office India believe that Dhawan’s star power was growing.
That year, Dhawan made his last cameo as the younger sibling of Shah Rukh Khan’s character in Rohit Shetty’s ensemble action drama Dilwale, which also starred Kajol, Kriti Sanon, and Khan. The movie was a commercial success despite reviewers’ mixed reviews, earning over ₹3.75 billion (US$45 million) globally, making it Dhawan’s highest-grossing release and among the highest-grossing Bollywood productions. He then entered the scene.
