After that, he starred in the critically acclaimed action thriller movies Humraaz (2002), Badal (2000), Bichhoo (2000), Soldier (1998), Gupt (1997), and Ajnabee (2001).
He was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Actor for the last of these. A professional slump ensued, during which his commercially successful The group films Apne (2007), Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), Race 3 (2018), and Housefull 4 (2019) were the projects in question.
Since then, Deol has acted in three streaming projects: Love Hostel (2022), Aashram (2020–present), and Class of ’83 (2020). Then, in the very successful action movie Animal (2023), he portrayed a villain, earning him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

acting profession
Initial achievement (1995–2003)
In Rajkumar Santoshi’s 1995 romantic comedy Barsaat, Deol made his adult acting debut opposite Twinkle Khanna. In the film, he played a young, intelligent, and innocent man who goes from a small hamlet to a big metropolis and becomes entangled with corrupt police and criminal gangs while falling in love. The movie was a huge smash at the box office and won him the Best Male Filmfare Award.
Make your debut. He repeated this achievement in the suspense thriller Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997) directed by Rajiv Rai, starring Manisha Koirala and Kajol as a guy who is falsely imprisoned and accused of killing his stepfather over an engagement proposal. Gupt was praised for its plot and soundtrack in addition to its monetary success. Alongside Aishwarya Rai, his other 1997 release, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, was a box office failure.
Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Kareeb, Deol’s debut release in 1998, ended up being his second straight failure. In the military thriller Soldier (1998), which also starred Raakhee and Preity Zinta, he collaborated with Abbas-Mustan for the first of many times, playing the son of a man convicted of smuggling weaponry. Soldier got very favorable criticism and turned out to be his third straight victory after Barsaat and Gupt. His brother Sunny Deol directed the forgettable love triangle Dillagi, which was his only release of 1999.
The following century saw Deol costarring with Rani Mukerji in the commercially successful action dramas Bichhoo (2000) and Badal (2000). In Badal, which is centered around the 1984 riots that envelop large portions of Delhi and Punjab, the protagonist’s family is massacred by a dishonest inspector, and he goes on to become a notorious terrorist.
Despite the film’s positive box office performance, Deol’s portrayal of a young, middle-class man who falls in love with a wealthy woman in Bichhoo received negative reviews. In Hum To Mohabbat, he was later coupled with Karisma Kapoor.
Aashiq (2001) and Karega (2000) were both failures. Next, alongside Kareena Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, and Bipasha Basu, Deol portrayed a married man caught up in a web of deceit and extramarital affairs in Abbas-Mustan’s thriller Ajnabee (2001). Although the movie didn’t make much money, Kumar and Deol’s performances won awards.
In the ill-fated historical drama 23rd March 1931: Shaheed (2002), he and his brother played the parts of independence fighters Bhagat Singh and Chandra Shekhar Azad, respectively. This marked his reunion with Sunny Deol. The film, which is set in British India, tells the story of what happened before Bhagat Singh and his friends Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged on March 23, 1931.
Despite the film’s mixed reviews, Rediff.com thought it had a lot of enjoyable moments, and many terrible ones and thought the movie was better than the first Bhagat Singh movie, even though they thought the pain of Bhagat Singh’s struggle was minimized, lessening the cruelty and suffering experienced in the actual event.
Rediff.com felt that Ajay Devgan in The Legend of Bhagat Singh outperformed Deol in terms of performance, saying, “Devgan is clearly the winner, with the advantage of a stronger script and a better director.” Deol was commended for certain parts but was criticized for his loud acting. One of India’s best performers, Devgan is eager to try his hand at several parts and is said to have dropped weight to look the part. Deol does his best, but acting and yelling is hard.
Later in 2002, Deol played a dapper, well-to-do shipping magnate in Abbas-Mustan’s romantic thriller Humraaz, a romantic triangle including Ameesha Patel, Akshaye Khanna, and him. For this portrayal, Deol was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews, but it was relatively successful overall.
Chitra Mahesh of The Hindu said of the movie, “Deol spends the entire first half looking moony eyed and spaced out, but overcomes the stupor towards the end where he actually gives a good performance.” In David Dhawan’s Chor Machaaye Shor (2002), he played a small-time criminal who finds himself in possession of millions of dollars’ worth of diamonds, with Shilpa Shetty, Bipasha Basu, Paresh Rawal, and Om Puri.
Setback and pause in career (2004–2017) Deol made a comeback with Kismat (2004), starring Priyanka Chopra, following a year-long absence. In his subsequent two 2004 films, Bardaasht (starring Vikram Bhatt) and Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo (starring Anil Sharma), he played army officers.
While the latter had an ensemble cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, and Sunny Deol (playing two roles), the former dealt with themes of police brutality, corruption, and justice. The commercial success of each of these movies was lackluster. In contrast, he was praised for the role in which he donned a turban or pugh, which attracted more attention from the Punjabi community and led to remarks stating that he looked better in a turban.

He released five albums in 2002, with the soundtracks to the movies Kalusukovalani, Manmadhudu, and Sontham becoming the biggest hits at the time. These movies were well-received both artistically and commercially, and DSP’s musical compositions played a part in that success. Sontham and Manmadhudu were among the year’s biggest musical hits. The majority of the tracks on these CDs were well-liked by fans.
According to a reviewer for Manmadhudu, Devi Sri Prasad’s music is superb. The background score is rather impressive as well. The songs’ picturization has improved Manmadhudu’s auditory quality.” Devi wrote the soundtrack for the patriotic movie Khadgam that same year. The Times of India’s Krishna Prasad Chigurupati wrote: “‘Meme With a touch of satire and humor, Devi Sri Prasad’s composition “Indians” captures the true spirit and togetherness of Indians.” Sumangali’s rendition of “Nuvvu Nuvvu” is yet another of the album’s greatest hits.
The soundtrack CD for the movie Varsham was made available through Aditya Music on December 18, 2003, during the audio launch party held at the Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad, even though the movie was released in 2004. This is his second project with producer M. S. Raju, who brought him to the attention of the cinema business in 1999 through Devi.
With the album’s “Neeti Mulla” song, Devi made his brother Gandham Sagar’s debut in the music business known. At the box office, the movie was a big success. He won three accolades for the soundtrack, including CineMAA’s Best Music Director and Santosham’s Best Music Director. Telugu Filmfare Award for Best Music Director and Awards for Best Music Director.
According to a review, he provided the movie with the ideal sound and deeply affected the viewers with his evocative, passionate, and heartfelt music. In 2004, he carried on with his “romantic music” style with his next huge hit, Arya. Devi’s first partnership was with Sukumar, a frequent partner.
The Telugu states and other regions of India saw a great deal of popularity for the song “Aa Ante Amalapuram”. A Times of India critic deems the six-track to be the greatest song ever. Another reviewer from IndiaGlitz stated: “Musician Devi Sri Prasad is the one who deserves all the praise. In the songs, he is at his most motivating.
