He gained notoriety as a member of the musical group the 1975, whose five albums peaked at the top of the UK Albums Chart. He co-wrote and co-produced the band’s songs with Matty Healy, earning him two Ivor Novello Awards, including Songwriter of the Year, and four Brit Awards, among other honors and nominations.

Additionally, he has received two Mercury Prize co-nominations and one Grammy Award co-nomination. “Screen Cleaner” was his first single, which was released in August 2024. In May 2022, Charli XCX revealed her relationship with Daniel, and in November 2023, they became engaged. Her song “Talk Talk” is about him, and he produced it songs “Apple,” “Club Classics,” and “In the City.”

The UK singles chart featured the songs “In the City” and “Apple” at positions 41 and 8, respectively. Coupdekat has cited Beabadoobee and PinkPantheress’s co-production “Tinkerbell Is Overrated” as an inspiration. He also co-produced the Japanese House’s Good at Falling and In the End It Always Does, which peaked at numbers 64 and 29 on the UK Albums Chart, respectively.

Life and work

Bedford, George Born in Brussels, Belgium, Daniel was raised in Seattle, Washington, in the United States. The lightness of Fleetwood Mac’s writings initially influenced him. Later, he relocated to England and started attending Wilmslow High School. He became a member of the 1975 in 2002 as drummer, taking the place of future Editors keyboardist Elliott Williams, and Matty Healy, who had been elevated to lead singer .

Drive Like I Do was the band’s emo name at the time. Daniel left school at the age of sixteen after taking a GCSE in music technology  and enrolled in a Manchester college to study electronic music. During that time, he was exposed to the works of artists such as Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert, Squarepusher, and Boards of Canada by his teachers .

Daniel would frequently use the college studio to create 1975 pieces, even submitting them as assignments. In order to maintain the band’s cohesiveness, Daniel, Adam Hann, and Ross MacDonald attended Manchester University, where they all worked as delivery drivers for A Chinese eatery.

Jamie Oborne was managing the band by 2010. When labels showed no interest, Oborne founded Dirty Hit and paid £20 to sign the band.[9] Four extended plays (Facedown in August 2012, Sex in November 2012, Music for Cars in March 2013 and IV in May 2013) were released on that label.

The albums that peaked at the top of the UK album charts were The 1975 (2013), I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It (2016), A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships (2018), Notes on a Conditional Form (2020), and Being Funny in a Foreign Language (2022).

I Enjoy It When You “Give Yourself a Try” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in 2020, “Love It If We Made It” won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song, and Sleep and A Brief Inquiry were both nominated for the Mercury Prize. The latter won a Brit Award for British Album of the Year in 2019  Daniel shared the 2017 Brit Award for British Group with the 1975, and he was nominated alongside Healy for Songwriter of the Year at the 2023 Ivor Novello Awards .

The GQ Men of the Year Awards’ 2019 GQ Band of the Year  and the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year  Best British, 2020 NME Band Of The Decade The Brit Award for British Rock/Alternative Act in 2023, as well as the Band and NME Innovation Award at the NME awards that year.

Daniel injured his shoulder after falling off their tour van in May 2016 while they were on their I Like It When You Sleep Tour. Freddy Sheed of The Japanese House, who he later commended for mastering their full set in less than a day, took his position for the time being.

The band’s Music for Cars tour ran from 2018 to March 2020, although it was cut short early because to the COVID-19 pandemic. Daniel practiced deejaying throughout lockdown. At the 2019 GQ Awards, he met Charli XCX, who revealed their relationship in May 2022;  her 2024 song “Talk Talk” was about an incident at the 2020 NME Awards in

Though she had not yet met Daniel in person, XCX, who had been corresponding with him online, nearly followed him into a restroom before she could introduce herself. Both XCX and the 1975 contributed to the UK No. 94 single “Spinning” for No Rome, which they had collaborated on at the 2020 St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival .

XCX revealed their engagement in November 2023 by showing off a diamond ring in a selfie that was posted to her personal Instagram account. XCX claimed that she and Daniel were “fucking for life” in later since-deleted pictures that were posted to her public Instagram account.

The band struck a wall due to this, delaying the release of their fifth album Healy’s separation from FKA Twigs and Daniel’s despair. In March 2022, the band went on tour again, and they went on to tour with At Their Very Best and Still… At Their Very Best.  Daniel deejayed at afterparties in 1975 after the pandemic.

Following a performance at Finsbury Park on July 2, 2023, when Healy apologized for his personal transgressions,  the general manager of Dirty Hit proposed hosting a Dirty Hit club night, which led to the label’s proposal to start an imprint. Daniel had been wanting to work with Kelly Lee Owens for a few years, and XCX’s management had recently started managing her.

Healy’s remarks at Malaysia’s Good Vibes Festival later that month caused the event to be canceled two days early, and its organizers to sue the members of the band for compensation. The band’s last scheduled performance was in March 2024. Healy later announced during a September 2023 show in Sacramento that they will take “indefinite hiatus” once their booked series of shows was over.

Owens was then signed by Daniel to Dh2, which debuted in July 2024 with a party at Phonox in Brixton and her track “Love You Got.” DJs Tim From The House and Oscar Farrell performed during the celebration, along with Kelly Lee Owens, the imprint’s first signing. He released the glitchy three-minute, thirty-second dance track “Screen Cleaner” the following month.

TimFromTheHouse and Tove Lo, the song’s vocalist, co-wrote the song’s lyrics . The song had previously been played at a number of occasions, such as Glastonbury Festival appearances with XCX and Boiler Room New York, London’s Venue MOT with Jamie xx, and Ibiza’s Amnesia. Later, Farrell and Kelbin released remixes. The ambient and techno-influenced song “Chlorine” was published by Daniel in November 2024.

He contributed drums to the song “Bayonne” from Little Comets’ Life Is Elsewhere, which peaked at No. 70 on the UK Albums Chart in October 2012 . The Japanese House and Daniel would go on to coproduce her EPs Clean (2015, with Healy), Swim Against the Tide (2016), and Saw You in a Dream (2017, with Healy), after Healy met them through an ex-girlfriend in 2015.

Her albums Good at Falling (2019, with BJ Burton) followed. as well as In Chloe Kraemer’s 2023 album, The End It Always Does,  peaked at places 64 and 29 on the UK Albums Chart. Pale Waves’ “There’s a Honey” and “Television Romance” were produced by Healy and Daniel in 2017.

He and Daniel recorded Rome’s third EP, RIP Indo Hisashi, in 2018 after Healy sent an email inviting him to the UK . Rome’s fourth EP, Crying in the Prettiest Places, was released the following year. Rome’s album It’s All Smiles was co-produced by Daniel and Burton in 2021. Healy and Daniel coproduced Our Extended Play by Beabadoobee in June 2021.

Daniel co-produced “Tinkerbell is Overrated” by Beabadoobee and PinkPantheress the next year. Later, the song was featured on Beabadoobee’s album Beatopia, which peaked at number four on the UK Albums Chart . March 2023 Coupdekat claimed that her 2023 song “Babyteef” was influenced by “Tinkerbell is Overrated.”

The title track of Charli XCX’s album Crash was produced by Daniel and A. G. Cook in March 2022 . Daniel also produced the album’s deluxe version tracks “How Can I Not Know What I Need Right Now” and “Selfish Girl” later that same month. He coproduced her and Leo Birenberg’s Bottoms the next month after producing her song “Hot Girl” in July of the following year, which was featured on the Bodies Bodies Bodies soundtrack .

They collaborated on a remix of Caroline Polachek’s “Welcome to My Island” in January 2023 , and in October of the same year, he co-produced the single “In the City” with Sam Smith and XCX , which peaked at No. 41 on the UK singles chart. Brat, her 2024 album, he created “Apple” and “Club Classics” by XCX, the latter of which peaked at No. 8 on the UK singles list .

“B2B” with Daniel on the cover art and “Club Classics” were both released as singles. After first declining to participate in “Apple’s” dance, Daniel went viral, only giving in on the first day of her Brat tour. The songs “Club Classics” and “Sympathy Is a Knife” by Brat also specifically address Daniel.

“Feels Like My Hands Are On Fire” from Salute’s EP Shield, which he coproduced in May 2023, also included contributions from Sammy Virji and No Rome. Daniel has been “energised” in “recent years” by dancers such as Salute, Virji, and Floating Points, according to a letter written by Shaad D’Souza of The Face.

The month after that, Daniel published two remixes of “Go!” from the former’s album True Magic, featuring Salute and なかむらみなみ [Wikidata]. He made a remix of Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Shadow” from her album The Loveliest Time, which she had released the month before, in August 2023. He remixed “The Hills (feat. Deela)” by Coco & Clair Clair that September , which was featured on the deluxe edition of their album Sex.
