Following that, he became a favorite among music directors. He sang thousands of songs, including Hindi ones, in the 1990s.
Born on December 1, 1955, into an ethnic Maithil Brahmin family, Udit Narayan Jha was the son of Indian national Bhuvaneshwari Jha and Nepalese national Harekrishna Jha. Following his 2009 receipt of the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian distinction, there were allegations casting doubt on Narayan’s Indian citizenship on the grounds that he was born in Nepal.
Udit Narayan, however, called these reports “completely false” and claimed that he was born in his maternal grandparents’ home in Baisi village, Supaul district, Bihar, close to the border between India and Nepal. He said that he was “from Nepal but his mother’s home was in Bihar” to the Nepalese daily Kantipur after his acceptance of the Padma Shri led to criticism in that country.
He confirmed that he was born in Baisi and that his father Harekrishna was a resident of Bhardaha, Saptari District, Sagarmatha Zone (modern-day Madhesh Province), Nepal, on the Indian border, in a 2017 interview with the Indian magazine Outlook. At an event hosted by the Bihar Jharkhand Association of North America in September 2018, Udit Narayan declared that he is a Bihari.
Narayan studied in Jageshwar High School, Kunauli, Supaul, Bihar, India, where he got his SSC and thereafter obtained his intermediate degree from Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Campus of Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal. His father Harekrishna Jha was a farmer and his mother Bhuvneshwari Devi was a folk singer who encouraged his career.
Ranjana Narayan made the allegation that she was her husband’s first wife in 2006, although Narayan has always refuted this. He afterwards pronounced her his wife and pledged to support her. Narayan is the father of two married couples: Deepa Gahatraj and Ranjana Narayan Jha. While he was still married to Ranjana Narayan, he started dating Deepa Gahatraj. In 1985, Narayan and Deepa tied the knot. Aditya Narayan, his son with Deepa Gahatraj, is a playback singer as well.
During the 1990s and the first part of the 2000s, Narayan was one of the most well-known Bollywood vocalists. He has provided several Bollywood celebrities with their on-screen singing voices. Bollywood celebrities Rajesh Khanna, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Amitabh Bachchan, and Dev Anand have all heard his songs. He performs duets with Alka Yagnik the most.
He started out as a Maithili folk singer (staff artist) for Radio Nepal in 1970, primarily performing Nepali and Maithili versions of popular folk tunes.[Untrustworthy source?] He began to sing contemporary Nepali songs gradually. After eight years, Narayan relocated to Bombay to study classical music at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan thanks to a musical grant awarded to Nepalese nationals by the Indian Embassy in that country.
After being noticed by music director Rajesh Roshan, who requested that Narayan playback sing for the Hindi movie Unees-Bees, Narayan began his Bollywood career in 1980. Mohammed Rafi, a vocalist, allowed Narayan to sing with him. He performed a Swami Dada couplet for Devanand. He sang his debut duet in the movie Sannata. Soon after,
Narayan sang in several more movies, such as 1983’s Bade Dil Wala, in which he performed a duet with veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar that was written by famed music director R. D. Burman. Narayan and Kishore Kumar performed together in the movie Kehdo Pyar Hai that same year. He also performed with Suresh Wadkar, whose music was composed by Bappi Lahiri.
